Note on contested claims: Canonical in Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Bibles; printed in the Apocrypha by Protestants and absent from the Hebrew canon. Berean carries 1 Maccabees as first-rate history of the intertestamental period, not as Scripture.

A sober Jewish chronicle of the revolt against Antiochus IV — the desecration of the temple, the rising under Mattathias and Judas Maccabeus, and the rededication that Hanukkah remembers.
