The Sea of Galilee Boat ("Jesus Boat")

Era
c. 50 BC – AD 50
Location
Ginosar, Sea of Galilee
Discovered
1986

A remarkably preserved 8.2-meter wooden fishing boat from the first century AD — exactly the type of vessel Jesus' disciples used on the Sea of Galilee.

The find

Discovered by two brothers during a severe drought that exposed the lakebed in 1986. Carbon-14 and pottery dating place it between roughly 50 BC and AD 50. The boat is the size and design described in the Gospels — large enough for 13 men, propelled by oars and a sail.

Why it matters

It gives us physical context for dozens of Gospel scenes: the calling of the fishermen, the stilling of the storm, Jesus walking on the water, the post-resurrection breakfast on the shore.
