Isaiah and Jeremiah predicted that Babylon — then the greatest city on earth — would be permanently uninhabited, never rebuilt, and shunned even by wandering nomads. The site has remained desolate for centuries.
The find
Isaiah 13:19-22 and Jeremiah 50-51 announce that Babylon will become "as Sodom and Gomorrah," that "no Arab will pitch his tent there, nor will shepherds make their flocks lie down there," and that her stones will not be used for building. Unlike most ancient cities, Babylon — destroyed multiple times after Cyrus — was never rebuilt as a living city. Saddam Hussein's 1980s reconstruction was a propaganda exercise on top of ruins, not a revived city.
Why it matters
That's a startlingly specific prediction about a great superpower's permanent abandonment — fulfilled over the long span of centuries, against every geographic and economic expectation you'd naturally have.
