Biblical city
Ai
et-Tell, West Bank · Central hill country
The second Canaanite city Israel faced after Jericho, Ai defeated them first because of Achan's sin and then fell by ambush (Joshua 7-8). The identification of the site remains debated among archaeologists.
History in Scripture
Israel's first assault on Ai failed because of Achan's sin, and the city was taken only after repentance and an ambush (Joshua 7–8). Abram had earlier camped between Bethel and Ai.
The ancient city
Ai means simply "the ruin". It lay just east of Bethel, guarding the ascent from the Jordan Valley into the central hills — the natural next objective after Jericho.
The site today
Most identify Ai with et-Tell, though the dating of its destruction is debated and some scholars prefer nearby Khirbet el-Maqatir. The site is an open archaeological ruin.
