Biblical city
Berea
Veria, Greece · Macedonia
A quiet Macedonian town off the main road, Berea is remembered for hearers who received the word eagerly and searched the Scriptures daily to test what they were told (Acts 17:10-12). A traditional bema commemorates Paul's preaching in modern Veria.
History in Scripture
The Bereans "examined the scriptures every day" to test Paul's preaching (Acts 17:11) — the passage that gives this app its name. Many believed before agitators arrived from Thessalonica.
The ancient city
Berea lay off the main highway at the foot of Mount Vermio, a quieter provincial town with a Jewish community, which made for a calmer hearing than Thessalonica gave.
The site today
Veria in Greece marks the traditional preaching site with a mosaic-decorated bema, and the city retains a restored Jewish quarter and synagogue.
