Biblical city
Megiddo
Tel Megiddo, Israel · Jezreel Valley
Guarding the pass into the Jezreel Valley, Megiddo was fortified by Solomon and saw repeated battles, including Josiah's death. Its Hebrew name lies behind the "Armageddon" of Revelation 16:16. The tell preserves layered cities, a water tunnel, and stables.
History in Scripture
Joshua defeated its king; Deborah and Barak fought nearby; Solomon fortified it; Josiah was killed there by Pharaoh Neco. Revelation 16:16 names "Armageddon" — the mount of Megiddo — as the gathering place for the final battle.
The ancient city
Megiddo guarded the pass where the Via Maris entered the Jezreel Valley, the most strategically fought-over point in the land, with more than twenty superimposed cities on the mound.
The site today
Tel Megiddo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and national park, known for its gates, grain silo, stables and a tunnel to a hidden spring.
