The Cities of Refuge

The shadow (Old Testament)

Six cities were set aside inside Israel — three on each side of the Jordan — where someone who had killed accidentally could flee from the avenger of blood. Once he was inside the walls, he was safe, and he stayed safe until the death of the high priest (Numbers 35; Joshua 20). Refuge, but on very specific terms.

The substance (Christ)

Hebrews picks up the very picture: "we who have fled for refuge would have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us" (Hebrews 6:18). Christ is our city of refuge, and we're kept safe "until the death of the High Priest." But here the picture bursts open — our High Priest never dies, so refuge in Him never expires.
