Joshua → Jesus
The same Name leading God's people in
The shadow (Old Testament)
"Joshua" in Hebrew is Yehoshua — which becomes Yeshua — and it means "Yahweh saves." In Israel's story, Moses gave the Law, but it was Joshua who led the people into the Promised Land, a rest the Law itself was never able to give (Joshua 1; Hebrews 4:8). The name and the role were both prophetic.

The substance (Christ)
Jesus bears the very same Name — the Greek Iēsous simply *is* Joshua. "You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21). Where Moses (the Law) could only bring the people to the edge of rest, the true Joshua brings us all the way in.
- Matthew 1:21— You shall call His name Jesus
Apostolic commentary
Hebrews 4:8-9 — "if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God."
- Hebrews 4:8-9— If Joshua had given them rest

The Law was never meant to lead you home. Only Jesus does.
