Prophecy
The River from the Rock → Living Water
From a struck rock to a flowing river
The shadow (Old Testament)
Ezekiel was shown a river flowing out from under the threshold of the temple — starting small, deepening the further it went, healing whatever it touched (Ezekiel 47). Zechariah picked up the same picture and promised that "living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem" (Zechariah 14:8). It's a river with a source in the presence of God.
- Ezekiel 47:1-12— The river from the temple
- Zechariah 14:8— Living waters from Jerusalem
The substance (Christ)
At the Feast of Tabernacles, Jesus stood up and cried out: "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water'" — and John tells us plainly this was the Spirit He was talking about (John 7:37-39). The river Ezekiel saw is now flowing out from the temple of Christ, and out from His people.
- John 7:37-39— Rivers of living water — the Spirit
- Revelation 22:1-2— A river from the throne
Take it in
The river still flows from the throne (Revelation 22:1). Come and drink.
