The Sabbath Rest
From the work of creation to the rest that remains
The shadow (Old Testament)
God rested on the seventh day from all His work of creation (Genesis 2:2-3), and the weekly Sabbath became a sign to Israel of that rest. Later, the Promised Land was described as a deeper rest under Joshua. Both pointed forward — Scripture keeps hinting that the real rest was still ahead.

The substance (Christ)
Christ Himself turns out to be that rest. He is the one who says, "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). Saving faith, at its heart, is ceasing from our own works to trust His finished work — resting the way God rested when the work was done.

Apostolic commentary
Hebrews 4:1-11 — "There remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his" (Hebrews 4:9-10).
