Second Vatican Council
- Era
- 20th century
- Location
- Rome
- Discovered
- AD 1962–1965
Modern Roman Catholic council. It renewed liturgy (Mass in the vernacular), rewrote the church's relationship to other Christians and other religions, and reaffirmed — while restating — the teaching of Trent and Vatican I.
The find
Vatican II produced sixteen documents. Sacrosanctum Concilium reformed the liturgy. Lumen Gentium redescribed the church and reaffirmed papal infallibility while also emphasizing the bishops as a college. Dei Verbum re-stated the equal authority of Scripture and unwritten tradition. Unitatis Redintegratio opened dialogue with "separated brethren" (Protestants and Orthodox). Nostra Aetate addressed relations with Judaism and other religions. Nothing in Vatican II retracted Trent — it explicitly reaffirms it — but the tone toward other Christians is markedly warmer.
Why it matters
The council most modern Catholics live inside. Reading it is essential for anyone in ecumenical conversation or trying to understand today's Roman Catholic Church without projecting either a caricature or a fantasy onto it.
